End of the iron lung era

Two remarkable lives bookend the iron lung era in the United States. Paul Alexander, paralysed by polio in 1952, lived more than 70 years in an iron lung and died in March 2024; Martha Ann Lillard, paralysed in 1953, died on June 26, 2026, and her passing appears to mark the end of Americans relying on iron lungs. Their stories underscore personal resilience and the public health milestone of the 1955 Jonas Salk vaccine.
